Mastiff Club of America (MCOA) National Specialty Health Award Recipients
The Mastiff Club of America Health Awards program and the OFA Champion of Health Award recognize Mastiffs, owned by Mastiff Club of America members (in good standing), who have met specific requirements. The Mastiff Club of America web site will provide additional information about the club and requirements to become a member.
The original MCOA Health Awards are designed to recognize Mastiffs that have passed recommended health screening tests and to acknowledge the owners for health testing their dogs. The level of achievement (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) is based on the test results submitted with the Application. The award is given during the MCOA National Specialty Banquet. The level of achievements include:
- Bronze: Passing OFA, OVC, or GDC hips, OFA, OVC, or GDC elbows, and CERF certified
- Silver: Passing OFA, OVC, or GDC hips, OFA, OVC, or GDC elbows, CERF certified, OFA Heart and passing MSU or other lab's equivalent full thyroid panel and/or OFA Thyroid Certification
- Passing OFA, OVC, or GDC hips, OFA, OVC, or GDC elbows, CERF certified, OFA Heart and passing MSU or other lab's equivalent full thyroid panel and/or OFA Thyroid Certification, OFA Patella, vWF normal, UPenn Cystinuria normal
A new Health Testing Award was approved by the Mastiff Club of America Board of Directors in January 2022. The MCOA (Mastiff Club of America) Health Testing Award is designed to promote the betterment of the Mastiff breed through health testing and publishing results through the Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA). The program recognizes Mastiffs, owned by MCOA members, which have met specific health testing requirements and submitted an Application with OFA link and additional documentation (University of Pennsylvania (PennGen) Cystinuria Urine (intact males only) – Nitroprusside test) and the award is given during the MCOA National Specialty Banquet. The health testing requirements include:
- Canine Multifocal Retinopathy Type 1 (CMR) DNA
- OFA Basic Cardiac (must be performed by a veterinary cardiologist) or OFA Advanced Cardiac
- Cystinuria-Associated Marker (Type 3) DNA
- University of Pennsylvania (PennGen) Cystinuria Urine (intact males only) – Nitroprusside test
- Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) DNA
- OFA Elbows
- Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) certified eyes
- OFA Hips or PennHIP
- OFA Patellar Luxation
- Permanent identification via Microchip or Tattoo
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) DNA
- OFA Thyroid Panel (Approved OFA Thyroid Lab)

The OFA Champion of Health Award is the annual CHIC/Parent Club Champion of Health Award that is sponsored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and is intended to recognize a dog that has had significant accomplishments in the ring, in the field, in performance events, as a producer, or as a working dog, AND has the full complement of health testing appropriate for its breed.
